When Should You Renew?

  • Validity Expiring: Your passport is expiring within the next 12 months.
  • Expired Passport: It has already expired (less than 3 years ago).
  • Pages Exhausted: You have run out of empty pages for visas.
  • Change in Details: Appearance change, name change, or address change.

Renewal vs Re-issue: What's the difference?

Renewal

Technically, "Renewal" is done ONLY when the passport validity has expired. It receives a new validity of 10 years.

Re-issue

"Re-issue" is when you need a new booklet because of lost/damaged passport, page exhaustion, or change in particulars (like address).

Note: The application form for both is the SAME ("Fresh/Re-issue").

Renewal Process: 4 Easy Steps

Login to Portal

Log in to the Passport Seva website. If you don't have an account, register first. Select "Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport".

Fill Application

Choose "Re-issue of Passport". Select the reason (Validity Expired / Change in Existing Personal Particulars etc.). Fill in your old passport details accurately.

Pay & Schedule

Pay the fee online (Rs. 1,500/2,000) and book an appointment at your nearest PSK or POPSK.

Visit PSK

Visit the center with your Old Passport (Mandatory) and other required documents. The old passport will be cancelled and returned to you.

Mandatory

  • ✓ Old Original Passport
  • ✓ Photocopies of first 2 and last 2 pages
  • ✓ ECR/Non-ECR page photocopy

If Address Changed

If your current address is different from the old passport, bring one:

  • ✓ Aadhaar Card
  • ✓ Voter ID
  • ✓ Utility Bill (Water/Elec/Gas)
  • ✓ Rent Agreement

* For minor applicants, parents' passport copies are also required.

Yes, you can apply for renewal up to 1 year before the expiry date.

My passport expired 5 years ago. Can I renew it?

Yes, but you will need to submit an affidavit explaining the reason for the delay, and police verification will be mandatory.

Will my old passport be returned?

Yes, your old passport will be cancelled (stamped "Cancelled") and returned to you along with the new passport. You should keep it safely, especially if it contains valid visas.
