Passport Police Verification

The most critical step in passport issuance. Understand the process to ensure a 'Clear' report and avoid RPO enquires.

Type 1: Pre-Police Verification

This is the standard process for most Fresh Passports.

  • 👉 Process: Passport is issued ONLY AFTER police verify your address and criminal record.
  • 👉 Timeline: Police usually visit within 1-2 weeks of your PSK appointment.
  • 👉 Dispatch: Passport is printed only after a 'Clear' report is received from the SP Office.

Type 2: Post-Police Verification

Available for Tatkaal and certain Re-issue cases.

  • 🚀 Process: Passport is issued FIRST (within 1-3 days), and verification happens LATER.
  • 🚀 Risk: If verification fails later, your passport will be impounded/cancelled.
  • 🚀 Eligibility: Requires strong documents (Aadhaar, Voter ID, PAN usually required) and no criminal record.

What to show the Police Officer?

When the officer visits your home (or calls you to the Thana), keep these ready:

Proof of Address Original Aadhaar/Rent Agreement/Utility Bill. They verify if you actually live there.
References (Witnesses) Details of 2 neighbours who know you (Name, Address, Phone Number). They might be asked to sign.
Passport Photos Keep 2 passport-sized photos handy (white background).

What is an 'Adverse' Report?

It means the police have raised an objection. Common reasons:

  • Applicant not found at given address.
  • Period of stay mentioned in form does not match checking.
  • Criminal case found pending.
How to Fix?

You must visit the Regional Passport Office (RPO) with valid proofs to clarify. In some cases, a re-verification is ordered.
