Passport Application Status Guide

Your passport file moves through several stages. Learn exactly what each status message means and what action you need to take.

How to Check Your Status

You need your 15-digit File Number (e.g., CH10123456789) which can be found on your application receipt.

Option 1: Online Portal

  1. Visit passportindia.gov.in
  2. Click "Track Application Status"
  3. Select "Passport/PCC/IC"
  4. Enter File No. & DOB

Option 2: SMS Service

Send an SMS from your registered mobile number:

STATUS <FILE NO> to 9704100100

Decoding Status Messages

Common

"Pending for Physical Police Verification at Thana..."

Meaning: Your file has reached your local police station. A police officer will visit your address soon, or you may be called to the station.
Action: Keep your address proof and references ready. Wait for the call.

Pending

"Passport Application is Under Review at Regional Passport Office"

Meaning: The police report might be unclear, or some documents are pending verification. It can also be a routine check.
Action: Wait for 1-2 weeks. If status doesn't change, visit RPO Enquiry.

Success

"Passport has been printed and you would receive an SMS..."

Meaning: Your application is approved and passport booklet is printed.
Action: Wait for the "Dispatched" status with Speed Post tracking number.

Passport Dispatch Status

Once dispatched, you will see:

"Passport has been dispatched vide Speed Post Tracking Number XXXXXXXXXIN."

You can track this number on the India Post Website.
