ECR vs Non-ECR (ECNR)

What is ECR & Non-ECR?

Indian passports are categorized into two types based on the holder's educational qualification and purpose of travel.

ECR (Emigration Check Required)

Given to applicants who have not passed 10th standard. They need clearance from the Protector of Emigrants (POE) to travel to 18 specific countries for work.

Non-ECR (ECNR)

Given to applicants who are 10th pass or above. They can travel anywhere for work or tourism without special emigration clearance.

Who qualifies for Non-ECR?

  • All holders of Matriculation (10th) or higher degrees.
  • All persons above the age of 50 years.
  • Income Tax payers (including agricultural income).
  • Spouses and dependent children of Non-ECR passport holders.

How to remove ECR Stamp?

If you have recently passed 10th or started paying tax, you can upgrade your passport.

  1. Apply for Re-issue: Select "Change in Existing Personal Particulars" > "Delete ECR".
  2. Select 'Non-ECR': Choose 'Yes' for "Are you eligible for Non-ECR category?".
  3. Upload Proof: Upload your 10th Marksheet or IT Assessment Order.
  4. Visit PSK: Carry originals for verification.
